Ear acupuncture
Ear acupuncture places a few fine, sterile, single-use needles at small points on each ear. It is a short, quiet visit, and you stay clothed in a recliner.
Who usually comes
People who are new to acupuncture, who are nervous about needles, or who want a short visit between longer ones.
What a visit is like, in order
Afterward you may feel calm or sleepy. The ears can feel warm or tender for a little while.
- 01
Step 1: Check in
A volunteer greets you and shows you to a recliner.
- 02
Step 2: A short talk
Your acupuncturist asks about your health and your medicines and looks at your ears.
- 03
Step 3: A few points
Fine needles go into a few small points on each ear. You sit back, and many people close their eyes.
- 04
Step 4: Out the door
The needles come out in a few minutes, you have some tea, and you choose what to pay.
Tell us first
Say any of these when you book, and again at the visit.
Pregnancy
If you are or might be pregnant, tell us. Some ear points are avoided, and your acupuncturist explains the risks.
Blood thinners or bleeding
If you take a blood thinner or bleed easily, bruising is more likely.
An infection or broken skin on the ear
We do not put needles in an ear with an infection, a sore or broken skin.
Recent piercings
Tell us about a new piercing so we can choose points away from it.
Worry about needles
Say so. Ear acupuncture is a gentle place to start, and you can stop at any time.
Feeling unwell today
If you have a fever or feel sick, call before you come and we will move your visit.
How many visits, and what this does not do
How many visits
Many people start with a few ear visits close together, then add acupuncture on the arms and legs. Your acupuncturist plans it with you, and it is never a promise of what will happen.
What it does not do
Ear acupuncture does not replace your doctor's care or your medicines, and results vary from person to person.
When to see a doctor instead
Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, a sudden severe headache unlike any before, or a fall with a head injury. For anything new, getting worse or not improving, see your doctor, and tell your acupuncturist what the doctor says.
