Cupping

Cupping sets warm glass cups on the skin of the back or shoulders. The suction lifts the skin gently, and the cups stay for a few minutes. At Daybed it is added to an acupuncture visit.

Who usually comes

People with tight shoulders and backs from lifting, driving or desk work who want something other than needles on that part of the day.

What a visit is like, in order

Afterward you may see faint round marks where the cups were. They usually fade in a few days, and the skin can feel warm.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Check in

A volunteer greets you and shows you to a recliner.

  2. 02

    Step 2: A short talk

Your acupuncturist asks about your health and your skin, and which cups suit you.

  3. 03

Step 3: The cups go on

Warm glass cups are set on your back or shoulders for a few minutes while you rest. You will feel a pull, not a pinch.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Out the door

The cups come off, you have some tea, and you choose what to pay.

Tell us first

Say any of these when you book, and again at the visit.

  • Blood thinners or bleeding

If you take a blood thinner or bleed easily, tell us. We may skip cupping.

  • Pregnancy

If you are or might be pregnant, tell us. We avoid cupping on the belly and low back.

  • Skin problems

We do not cup over a sunburn, a rash, a sore or broken skin.

  • A recent operation

Tell us about surgery in the last few months, so we keep the cups away from the scar.

  • Worry about the marks

Round marks are expected. If you will be seen in a swimsuit or on camera soon, say so.

  • Feeling unwell today

If you have a fever or feel sick, call before you come and we will move your visit.

How many visits, and what this does not do

How many visits

Cupping is an addition to a visit, not a course. Your acupuncturist suggests it when it fits and plans any repeat with you.

What it does not do

Cupping does not replace your doctor's care or your medicines, and results vary from person to person.

When to see a doctor instead

Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, a sudden severe headache unlike any before, or a fall with a head injury. For anything new, getting worse or not improving, see your doctor, and tell your acupuncturist what the doctor says.
